The outline is where a season is won or lost
A season that loses viewers episode by episode almost always shows the crack at outline stage — a hook that doesn't open fast enough, or a cliffhanger with nothing behind it. And the format rewards whoever gets that structure right at scale: Omdia forecasts microdramas will generate about $11 billion in global revenue in 2025, and Sensor Tower's State of Short Drama Apps report put Q1 2025 in-app spending near $700 million, close to 4x the year before. Episode Outline Template — PDF
The print-and-go version: a season arc summary block up top (title, episode count, season logline, season hook, finale beat), then twelve ruled rows — episode number, working title, logline, hook, core conflict, turn, cliffhanger, characters, runtime, status and notes. Print it and outline the season with a pen.
DownloadEpisode Outline Template — Excel (.xlsx)
The editable planner: the same season-arc summary block plus a frozen-header table across all eleven columns, with a built-in Status dropdown (Idea, Outlined, Scripted, Shot/Generated, Edited, Published). Add rows for a longer season, sort by status, or filter to see what's still unscripted. Opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice.

Features
The document that keeps a season from sagging
Serialized short drama lives or dies on the cliffhanger at the end of every episode and the arc that pays it off across the season. Most outline templates give you a logline field and nothing else — this one forces the hook, the turn and the cliffhanger onto every single row, so a weak episode shows up on the page before it ever gets scripted.
Episode outline — PDF & Excel
One row per episode: number, working title, logline, hook (0-3s), core conflict, turn/midpoint, cliffhanger, characters, runtime, status and notes — 12 ruled rows on the PDF, 12 sortable rows in Excel.
Season arc summary block
A dedicated header area above the episode table for the season title, total episode count, season-long logline, season-long hook and the climax or finale beat — the through-line every individual episode has to serve.
Status column built for iteration
Track each episode from Idea through Outlined, Scripted, Shot/Generated, Edited and Published in the Excel version — a dropdown, not a memory test, for where a 20-episode season actually stands.
Hook, conflict, turn, cliffhanger — in that order
The four columns that matter most sit side by side on purpose: a hook that has to land in the first three seconds, a conflict that has to be legible in one line, a turn that changes what the audience thinks is happening, and a cliffhanger that earns the next tap. Fill all four thinly and the gap is obvious before a single frame is shot.
Hook (0-3s) forces brevity
Vertical drama loses viewers in the first few seconds — writing the hook as its own column stops it from getting buried inside a paragraph of setup.
Turn/midpoint separates plot from event
A turn is a reveal or reversal that recontextualizes what came before — if this column reads the same as the conflict column, the episode probably doesn't have one yet.
Cliffhanger, written before the episode is
Deciding the cliffhanger at outline stage — not while editing — means the whole episode can be built to earn it, instead of a cliffhanger bolted on at the end.
Built for the batch-production math of short drama
Vertical drama seasons run 20 to 100+ micro-episodes, often written and generated in batches. That makes a single scannable outline the highest-leverage document in the writers' room: the same template that plans a 12-episode arc scales to a season by adding rows, not rebuilding the sheet.
Runtime column keeps pacing honest
Log target runtime per episode and the season's total watch time is a sum, not a guess — useful for platforms with fixed episode-length expectations.
Characters column tracks who's active
See at a glance which episodes carry the lead versus a supporting arc, and catch a character who disappears for ten episodes before it's a script problem.
Notes column for continuity flags
Log wardrobe changes, location reuse or callback lines per episode — the same discipline a shooting schedule uses, applied to story instead of logistics.
From outline to generated episodes
An outline is where the season gets decided; it doesn't have to be where the writing stalls. Once a row is solid — hook, conflict, turn and cliffhanger all filled in — paste it into DramaSo's AI episode generator and it drafts the script and generates the episode in order, keeping characters and continuity locked across the run.
Outline row in, episode out
The generator takes the same beats this template asks for — hook, conflict, turn, cliffhanger — and turns them into a scripted, generated episode.
Characters that hold across episodes
Locked character models keep faces and wardrobe consistent from episode 1 to episode 40 — continuity a spreadsheet alone can't enforce.
Generate the season in outline order
Work down the same rows you outlined, in sequence, so the season is generated in the order it airs, not the order it was thought of.
Three steps from premise to a season the room can run
Set the arc, outline every episode, generate in order.
- 1
Fill the season arc summary
Write the season title, total episode count, season-long logline, season-long hook and the climax or finale beat before outlining a single episode.
- 2
Outline every episode, row by row
Fill hook, core conflict, turn/midpoint and cliffhanger for each row — thin rows show a weak episode before it's scripted.
- 3
Generate the episodes in order
Once rows are solid, paste each into DramaSo's AI episode generator and produce the season in the sequence you outlined it.
Who this episode outline template is for
Same columns, three very different serialized productions.
Short-drama & vertical series writers
Plan a 20-to-100+ episode season with a hook, conflict, turn and cliffhanger for every row, then generate episodes in outline order with consistent characters.
Writers' rooms & indie showrunners
A shared, sortable sheet that keeps every episode's status visible — who's scripting what, and which rows are still just an idea.
Podcast & serialized audio creators
The same hook-conflict-turn-cliffhanger structure plans a serialized audio drama just as well as a video one — swap runtime for audio length.
Plan the rest of the season
The outline sets the arc — these structure what's inside each episode.
